Frequently Asked Questions

What is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)?

CBT is an evidence-based treatment for a number of mental health issues. It focuses on breaking down your thoughts, emotions, physical sensations, and behaviors. Once the relationship among these are identified, coping skills (such as challenging automatic negative thoughts) are taught in order to decrease symptoms.

What is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) ?

ACT focuses more on accepting one’s emotional experience. Mindfulness is practiced in order to detach from thoughts (this is particularly helpful for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), learn not to judge what are typically described as unpleasant feelings (distress, anger), but rather observe them and accept them as they are. Although ACT does not involve actively attempting to decrease symptoms, many people find that once they are able to accept them, they do end up decreasing.

What does it mean to be Neurodiversity Affirming?

This perspective is cognizant of the fact that it is normal and valuable that humans have always been a neurodiverse species. Being “neurotypical” does not need to be considered the ideal, and those who are neurodivergent need not be viewed as “disabled” or in need of changing. Too often, the dignity of neurodivergent individuals has been compromised in an effort to make them appear more neurotypical. This is not to say that the neurodivergent do not need therapy—whether neurotypical or neurodivergent, many people may choose to seek assistance in the form of therapy.

What is Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT?

DBT was first developed to treat individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder. Additionally, it has been found to be effective for individuals with mood disorders. Four main types of skills are taught to relieve symptoms: 1) Core Mindfulness Skills, 2) Interpersonal Effectiveness Skills, 3) Emotion Regulation Skills, and 4) Distress Tolerance Skills.

How do you accept payment?

Preferred method of payment is cash or check at the time of service, for copays, coinsurance, deductibles, and full private payments. I do require a credit card be kept on file to charge late cancellation and no-show fees. You may also choose to have me automatically charge your card for each visit’s payment.

Do I have to use my insurance?

No. Medical insurance requires that I submit a diagnosis and that your sessions are “medically necessary.” Some people prefer to pay out of pocket.
